Canciones de 12 sobre 10 "Walking In The Rain" y "Thinking Only Of You (Lust Don't Last)" GREEN PAJAMAS

Cuando se habla de bandas de los ochenta (o que comenzaron en este negocio en esa década) no es muy común escuchar o mentar al combo -todavía en activo- de Seattle Green Pajamas. Es sorprendente porque sus discos son una auténtica maravilla en los que flirtean con al paisley underground, el powerpop, el folk-rock, la new wave o la psicodelia.

Canciones para esta sección tienen a porrillo, por eso vamos a escoger dos. Nos decantamos por la temprana versión de su "Walking In The Rain", registrada en 1986 y que posteriormente se publicaría en su disco de 1989 "Ghosts Of Love" sin tanta carga crepuscular y por "Thinking Only Of You (Lust Don't Last)" integrada en su extraordinario cassette de 1984 titulado "Happy Halloween"

Ambas muy distintas entre sí y claramente de lo que nos gusta... y mucho.

Discos: "Goon" TOBIAS JESSO Jr. (True Panther-2015)

El canadiense Tobias Jesso Jr. tiene varias cosas a favor: juventud, gusto por la melodía, referencias melódicas de peso y, sobre todo, capacidad para aglutinar todas ellas en sencillas canciones con un marcado carácter atemporal y embellecidas por las notas que se escapan de su piano. Esas influencias, que tan bien tamiza Jesso, van de Harry Nilsson a Randy Newman, pasando por George Harrison, John Lennon o Emitt Rhodes, que, bien trabajadas -como es el caso-, hacen que el acabado final sea mucho más que estimulante y mantenga una viabilidad comercial más que apreciable.

Para echar más leña al fuego el hype adereza los créditos de este “Goon” (su estreno) con la coproducción de Patrick Carney (The Black Keys)

Pero pasará como (casi siempre) que la miel no estará hecha para la boca del asno.

Barna Howard parece (en lo musical) como sacado de otro tiempo y otro lugar, pero por suerte está más cerca de nosotros de lo que parece. Él es natural de la pequeña localidad de Eureka (Missouri), una de esas típicas ciudades del medio-oeste estadounidense en las que no hay demasiado que hacer y que tan buen resultado dan en el cine, la TV y la música country y el folk. Howard emigró de allí hacia el norte tras el instituto para estudiar animación y hacia el este por motivos puramente amorosos. Todo eso quedó atrás y ahora curiosamente reside en el oeste, concretamente en la estimulante ciudad de Portland.

Todas esas vivencias que han ido marcando a este virtuoso trovador desde su infancia hasta nuestros días  las va plasmando en unas canciones con raigambre clásica y acabado agridulce.

El 18 de mayo el sello que le publicó su estreno de hace tres años, Big Mama Recording Co., le pone en danza su nuevo material bajo el título de "Quite A Feelin’” en el que el songwriter afincado desde hace unos años en Portland arropa con algo más de instrumentación unas canciones atornilladas en la tradición folk y country de su país. Así en el disco escuchamos percusiones, lap steels, banjos, mandolinas y guitarras eléctricas que no aparecían en su descomunal estreno de hace 3 años y que embellecen más si cabe las hermosísimas melodías escritas por Howard.

Unas composiciones que hablan de la relación que tiene con su hogar actual y de sus vivencias en Eureka y en otras ciudades, que han evolucionado en la dirección correcta, ganando en matices y belleza y que le colocan –a nuestro juicio- como uno de los grandes cantautores en la actualidad.

El disco está producido por el atareado Adam Selzer (Blind Pilot, Baseball Project, M. Ward, Laura Gibson, Parson Red Heads, The Decemberists...) , grabado en el Type Foundry Studio de Portland y captura, ya desde su maravillosa portada, la esencia de los singer songwriters de los 60 y primeros 70 manteniendo como referencia sonora e influencia clara a próceres como Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Mickey Newbury o Fred Neil.

Una auténtica maravilla, facturada en pleno siglo XXI pero como extraída de algún viejo baúl que guarda tesoros escondidos y grabados entre, por ejemplo, 1969 y 1972.
