Canciones de 12 sobre 10: "Looking For The Magic" DWIGHT TWILLEY BAND

En Hotel Arizona somos fervorosos fans de la obra (y milagros) del gran Dwight Twilley. El de Tulsa tiene un generoso ramillete de excelentes composiciones pero hoy repescamos esta favorita -en lo personal- desde hace muchos años "Looking For The Magic"(sobre todo por lo evodacor de su intensa y algo oscura melodía). Interpretada majestuosamente por Twilley y acompañado a las seis cuerdas y el bajo por un habitual en sus grabaciones como Bill Pitcock IV , a la batería por su amigo del alma (el enorme y malogrado) Phil Seymour y a la guitarra por el no menos legendario Tom Petty.
La podéis encontrar en el escandaloso segundo disco de la Dwight Twilley Band titulado "Twilley Don't Mind", editado por la etiqueta de Leon Russell y Denny Cordell Shelter Records en septiembre de 1977.

Canciones de 12 sobre 10: "Her Wave" THE JUDY'S

No es el estado de la estrella solitaria (Texas) el que ha dejado para el recuerdo más formaciones escoradas al powerpop o la new wave, pero en los ochenta floreció en la localidad de Pearland un combo mucho más que disfrutable llamado The Judy's.

The Judy's editaron un total de tres LP's, un par de EP's y algún single con el persistente y amortiguado (gordo) sonido del bajo como estandarte en muchas de sus composiciones, como en esta maravillosa y algo tierna "Her Wave" que hoy os presentamos e incluida en su álbum largo de presentación titulado "Washarama" editado por Wasted Talent Records en 1981.

Discos: "Shadows" MASTON (Troubled In Mind-2013)

Siguiendo la estela que han ido dejando alquimistas del pop de la talla de Van Dyke Parks, Harry Nilsson, Phil Spector o Brian Wilson nos encontramos en este 2013 con el disco de presentación del joven californiano llamado Frank Maston, que firma sus canciones con su apellido Maston.
 El disco en cuestión lo publica el sello de Chicago, especialista en sonoridades con poso psicodélico, Troubled In Mind, se titula "Shadows" y nos ha gustado mucho, tanto que le dedicamos esta reseña en señal de reverencial admiración.

En 2011 Maston puso a la venta una serie de cassettes de factura casera en las que ya conectaba la esencia del pop californiano de finales de los sesenta con efluvios  contemporáneos de gran poder evocador. Pero es con este "Shadows" con el que el angelino alcanza la gloria pop, y lo hace por ofrecernos un ramillete de excelentes y psico-oníricas composiciones, alternando los números vocales con los instrumentales 

En la página web de la etiqueta que edita el álbum comentan que para introducirnos en su universo imaginemos a David Lynch rodando un episodio de Twin Peaks en Malibu... y no andan muy alejados sus capos, ya que las canciones que fabrica Maston tiene un apreciable componente onírico, cinemático, barroco y psicodélico pero, eso sí, con la melodía por delante lo que hace de este "Shadows" una must para paladares pop refinados y exquisitos. 

Maston es oriundo de un suburbio de LA y desde allí ha ido buscando la esencia pop de algunos de sus vecinos pretéritos (sobre todo los de la década de los sesenta), se ha encargado de grabar en analógico sin artificios digitales que pudieran otorgar artificialidad al conjunto y manipula prácticamente todos los instrumentos utilizados en el disco -que son muchos- excepto el harpa que blande dulcemente la jóven angelina Ana Caravelle (maestra en el manejo del instrumento popularizado por Harpo Marx). Así Maston nos entrega un disco fascinante, con requiebros de maravillosa psicodelia sunshine popera o también con ramalazos que hacen recordar a los mejores Kinks, a Burt Bacharach con sobredosis de ácido, Scott Walker o pasajes cercanos a Ennio Morricone. 

Pd. Este "Shadows" nos recuerda poderosamente a otros dos discos:
Por un lado a ese otro artefacto de pop barroco y arreglado titulado "Love At Thirty,  perpetrado por el norteamericano Joe Ziemba que firma sus discos con el sobrenombre de Beaujolais y editado en 2008 por el sello Parasol. 
Y por el otro al exquisito EP titilado "A Spectrals" Extended Play" editado por Moshi Moshi en 2010 y facturado por el británico Louis Jones, que también actúa con pseudónimo, este bajo el nombre de Spectrals. Ambos exquisitos también.

 

Canciones de 12 sobre 10: "Ain't That A Man" THE OPTIC NERVE

De entre toda la caterva de bandas que reverdecieron los laureles del (bien o mal) llamado revival garage norteamericano en los ochenta, una de las que más nos gusta son estos neoyorquinos llamados The Optic Nerve.

En el año 1986 debutaban para el sello Cryptovision con un EP de tres canciones cuyo corte titular es esta inconmensurable "Ain't That A Man", con claras referencias a héroes del folk-rock pretérico como los Byrds, Buffalo Springfield o los Youngbloods. Debe ser por eso que nos hacen tanto tilín...
